The Iconic Leaf Recluse is another one of the new releases that was debuted at this years IPCPR show.  I somehow managed to miss them when I was on the show floor, but did get the opportunity to meet them when I was at the Light Up Charlotte event hosted by Outland Cigar.  The cigars are produced in the Dominican by Don Jose Rafael and undergo an eight step fermentation process.  They are available in ten different sizes starting at a petite corona all the way to an 8×58 Kanu as well as the 6×60 Tarantula that I am smoking for this review.

I received this stick at the Light Up Charlotte event and have had it staring at me for a little over a month now.  I am not normally a large ring gauge smoker, but this is what was given to me at the event, so I will smoke it.

The look of this cigar is something that I did not truly appreciate until I brought it out into the sunlight.  The Brazilian Maduro wrapper is gorgeous.  It is dark, and very oily with some beautiful veins.  The double band is black with silver chrome trim bordering it.  The writing is the same chrome color and reads Recluse with a graphic of a spider on the upper band and Iconic OTG on the lower band.

The flavor profile of this cigar is fantastic.  I am not sure if it is the eight step fermentation process or the Brazilian Maduro wrapper, but this cigar tastes unlike any other that I have smoked.  The flavor profile is consistent throughout with a deep earthiness and notes of cocoa and leather.

The burn on this stick was pretty good overall.  I did have to touch it up three times while smoking due to it starting to go uneven.  However, I will take some if not all of the blame for that since I was smoking it outside and it was quite windy.  The ash on this cigar was firm and tight.  I typically ash fairly often, just because I’d rather it not fall on me.  On the first ash I mentioned to myself that “this ash is holding on like a son of a bitch”.  The smoke was pure white, and smoked like a freight train.

Overall, this is an excellent cigar.  Would I buy it again?  Yes, but probably in a smaller size, as that is what appeals to me.  I truly am looking forward to trying some of the other sizes, and cannot wait to see what else this company comes out with.  The only negative I have found so far is that none of my local retailers are carrying them yet.  Time to make some phone calls.
