Poppa P’s Top 10 List

Poppa P’s Picks

Well it is that time of the year again when the cigar industry publications and bloggers alike publish their “best of the year” cigar charts. As a retailer, I try to follow as many reviews and year-end charts as I can. I spent many years in the music industry where charts and reviews were also an important part of my work. With that said, I also know that a review is simply a personal opinion. So I’d like to share my personal “best of the best” picks. Before someone calls me out, my top picks for 2012 are not exclusively cigars that were new releases in 2012. These are the cigars I have smoked the most and typically always keep in my personal humidors. In no particular order, here are my top ten picks for 2012!

FOUR KICKS by Crowned Heads – I truly believe Jon & Mike nailed it on their first release. For me the fact that it is still one of my go to cigars a year after its debut is a testimonial of their quality and consistency. I am partial to the Seleccion No. 5.

PADRON Family Reserve 45 – Simply put one of the best cigars I have ever smoked.

ELOGIO LSV – The LSV has been and continues to one of my favorite cigars.  The Corona Extra is incredible. In full disclosure I have to also say that Nabil and Roseline are two of my favorite people in the cigar business. That said, if I didn’t feel the same way about their cigars they would not be on my list.

MONTECRISTO Epic No. 2 – It is no secret that I have a fondness for smaller, independent cigar companies. But the new Montecristo Epic from Altadis is a great cigar. The No. 2 is fantastic.

TATUAJE J21 – Some people come out with great cigars and then they reach celebrity status and the focus becomes more on the person rather than the cigar. Pete Johnson has certainly reached the “star” status, but fortunately he has been able to keep his focus on the cigars. I like most everything he has released, but the J21 tops my Pete Johnson list.

ORTEGA Serie D # 6 Maduro – A very solid cigar and I have smoked a ton of them this year.

EMILIO La Musa Corona – I loved this blend when it was the Grimalkin and now I can smoke it without it looking back at me! Seriously, this is a great cigar and in the short time since the release I have smoked several. The corona size is perfect for this blend in my opinion.

HEADLEY GRANGE – The second release from Crowned Heads was another hit. So many cigar companies put out new cigars just for the sake of saying they have something new. Crowned Heads released their second cigar when they had something ready that was completely different than their previous release. I don’t want to, but if I had to pick a “top release” for 2012 it would be Headley Grange.

ARTURO FUENTE Hemmingway – This is a classic cigar from a legendary family.  It is one of my all-time favorites.

There you have it, Poppa P’s Picks. I know it is my “top 10” list and you are only seeing nine. But I have two picks in the Four Kicks line. Thank you to my friends Frank and Pat here at Keeping Your Man Card for allowing me to write another guest blog. If you are in the middle Tennessee area, stop in and see us at Big Star Cigar Lounge!
