Harpoon UFO White

Wheat beer is (obviously) made with wheat. Doing so creates a much lighter color and more delicate flavor than beer made with barley and other grains. Historically, wheat has been a challenging grain to use in brewing, but when prepared well, a wheat beer can be quite distinctive and, in the eyes of many consumers, quite tasty- especially during the warm summers when the sun is beating down.

Beer companies have caught on to this, so be prepared to see advertisements such as Blue Moon and Shocktop Wheats, and this… Harpoon UFO White. Enter the summer wheat beers.

Origin: UFO White (Harpoon Brewery, Boston, MA)

ABV: 4.8%

IBU: 11

STYLE: American White Ale

Harpoon UFO White, which began being distributed by Harpoon Brewing Company in 2009, is a light, crisp, refreshing beer that contains spiced wheat. Brewed with orange peel and a unique blend of spices, UFO White is the perfect choice for a summer’s barbecue, a night out with friends or any time you¹re thirsting for something a little different.

Appearance – Hazy, golden yellow

Smell – Citrus- lots of citrus. Lemon peel, orange peel, and wheat

Taste – the perfect amount of citrus is balanced with an onset of wheat on the finish.

Drinkability – While wheat beers tend to feel a bit dense, the citrus brings it down a few notches. This beer is easy to drink.

Overall Score – 85%. Besides being a great summertime beer, it is widely available most of the year- not to mention everybody from beer stores to grocery supermarkets carry it, and a lot of restaurants carry it on draft. During the summer time (only), you can find these in cans as well. While Harpoon Brewery is not a large Brewery, their price is surprisingly on par with industry standards- around $9 for a six pack.
