Veritas Torch Connecticut

Veritas Torch Connecticut

Veritas Torch Connecticut

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut

Binder: Indonesian

Filler: Jalapa

Size: Toro 6×50

Price: $7.50

Acquired:  Sample courtesy of Veritas Cigars

We were very excited to receive the Veritas Torch Connecticut from Chris the director of Veritas Cigars.

The Torch Connecticut features a beautifully wrapped Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper.  The wrapper leaf was slightly oily with minimal veining.  The band on the Veritas Torch has a black and white color scheme and displays a clenched fist holding a burning cigar set to the background of a city skyline.  The artwork for the band is very cool.

Flavor wise the Torch Connecticut opened with some warm woody notes.  The more it smoked the more the flavors appeared.  About a quarter of the way in, this cigar develops a nice spice flavor to it.  I will mention that I smoked two of these cigars, the first when they arrived to me over a month ago, and one a couple nights ago.  The first did have a slight bitterness present while smoking.  I am guessing it just needed to sit in the humidor for a bit longer, because the second one was very good.

Construction wise this cigar is excellent.  The burn was smooth and the ash held on firm falling at around the quarter marks every time.  The Torch provides an adequate but not overbearing amount of smoke with a pleasant aroma.

Connecticut cigars are ones that are typically hard to get right.  The flavor profile of this cigar hits all of the right notes that you look for in a Connecticut cigar.  Recommend it?  Yes,  I’ll mention again that a little time in the humidor did wonders for it, as is true with a number of cigar we receive in the mail.  Go out and try one for yourself and let us know what you think.

DE dogma

The size will be called Undercrown “Dogma”, and has been created to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the online community Cigar Dojo. The blend of “Dogma” is based on the Undercrown Corona ¡Viva! and is comprised of Mexican San Andreas wrapper, Connecticut Stalk-Cut Habano binder, and Nicaraguan & Brazilian Mata Fina fillers. The “Dogma” will come in a 6 x 56 box-pressed vitola.

When asked about the “Dogma” project, Jonathan Drew said, “we have been major supporters of Cigar Dojo from the beginning. A handful of Drew Estate employees, myself included, are Dojo members, and we have always been floored by the support Drew Estate has received on the app and website. When Eric (owner of Cigar Dojo) approached us about coming up with this special commemorative cigar, it was a no-brainer. My dad, “Baitfish” Gary, came up with the name ‘Dogma’.”

The “Dogma” will be a limited run of 10-count bundles, and will be sold exclusively through Smoke Inn, a South Florida cigar retail chain, owned by Abe Debabneh. For those based outside of Florida, the cigars will be available through Smoke Inn’s web store. The “Dogma” will be priced at $9.95 MSRP per single and $99.50 MSRP per 10-count bundle.

The flavor profile of the “Dogma” aligns with that of the Corona ¡Viva!, featuring notes of cocoa, earth, and a rich spicy character. If you enjoy the Corona ¡Viva! but would like a longer, 56 ring gauge smoke, the “Dogma” will be a new favorite.

Press Release: Blessed Leaf Announces Release of Kairos.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Kyle Hoover and Chris Kelly, the leaders of BlessedLeaf.com, aChristian cigar-based ministry, announce the release of the long anticipated Blessed Leaf Kairos.

“This is a project that has been in our hearts for over a year. Our vision was to produce a great cigar with vintage tobaccos and have the proceeds go to ministry and missions efforts.” noted Kyle Hoover.

“For this project, we went back to our roots: Nicaraguan tobacco! This is a Nicaraguan puro in the Ezra Zion genre of blending. Since we are doing this for The Lord, it had to be the best work we could possibly do!” added Chris Kelly.

The Blessed Leaf Kairos is a 52 x 6.25 box press. The wrapper is Corojo 99 Rosado. The filler includes ligeros from Esteli and Jalapa. Total production is 4000 cigars of 100 boxes and 5 packs.

The Blessed Leaf Kairos is produced at the Casa Fernandez factory in Miami, Florida.

“We chose the name Kairos because of it’s unique meaning to this project. Kairos is defined as a specific moment in time when the Divine intervenes directly into your life. To us, there is a duel application. Obviously, as a person smokes the cigar they will have a “heavenly” smoking experience. Secondly, that the support raised for Christian missions will impact people’s lives with the gospel of Christ.” added Hoover.

Black Label Trading Company-Last Rites

Black Label Trading Company-Last Rites

BLTC Last RitesWrapper: Ecuadorian Maduro

Binder: Honduran

Filler: Nicaraguan and Honduran

Size: 5×54 Box Pressed

Price: $12

Acquired:  Sample courtesy of Black Label Trading Company

A few reviews back we were introduced to a newer brand, Black Label Trading Company, when we reviewed their stick, Lawless.  The Lawless stick impressed us, and made us anxious to try the other cigar they sent us for sampling, Last Rites.

This cigar features a dark brown slightly oily aged Ecuadorian maduro wrapper.  The wrapper is excellently applied and has minimal veining.   The BLTC Last Rites sports two bands, the traditional (aka badass) Black Label Trading Company band, as well as a foot band that reads “Last Rites.”

Flavor wise, I was impressed from the second I lit this cigar up until the second it burnt my lips and I finally had to lay it down.  Upon first light you are immediately hit with a strong and pleasant nuttiness.  As I smoked the cigar I also discovered some very nice earthy and wood notes, as well as a strong cocoa flavor to it.  The flavor of this cigar was so enjoyable, that I actually sent text messages to a few of my local shop owners telling them they need to look into this cigar while I was smoking it.

Burn wise it held up pretty well for a boxed pressed cigar which I typically always have an issue with.  The BLTC Last Rites only required one small touch up, other than that, it burnt all the way down flawlessly.

Buy it again?  Why do you think I sent messages to my local shop owners about this cigar?   The answer is most definitely yes!  I smoked two of these cigars for review, and am now walking around trying to figure out how I can get more.  Flavor was amazing, burn was good, everything you need to make a great cigar.  If your shop does not carry the Black Label Trading Company line, you probably need to tell them to check out this review.

Nomad Cigar Company Releases “Connecticut Fuerte.”

Nomad Cigar Company Releases “Connecticut Fuerte.”

Nomad logo

Orlando, FL (March 3, 2014) – Nomad Cigar Company is pleased to announce the release of the Connecticut Fuerte: Blended and rolled in the Dominican Republic.

Earlier in the year Fred Rewey, founder of Nomad Cigar Company, outlined his plans for the year, which included the release of a Connecticut cigar.

Created in the heart of the Dominican Republic, Nomad’s first Connecticut wrapped cigar successfully treads the fine line between traditional and progressive.

“The goal was to give traditional Connecticut smokers something a ‘bit more’ but not bury them in spice or strength. The other consideration was that I really wanted to create a cigar Nicaraguan fans would enjoy for their first smoke of the day. It was a very challenging endeavor. So far, the response has been very positive and I am pleased that so many people are taking to it” Said Rewey.

The Nomad Connecticut Fuerte cigar features the Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, an Ecuadorian Habano Binder, and Both Dominican and Nicaraguan fillers. The cigars come in 20 count boxes and is available in four sizes.

Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut
Binder: Ecuadorian Habano
Filler: Dominican Republic & Nicaragua

Corona 5.5 x 44 – $158
Toro – 6 x 52 $170
Robusto Gordo 5.5 x 54 – $170
Robusto 5 × 50 – $158

Nomad has grown considerably in the last year with the 2013 release of the Nicaraguan S-307 and the Esteli Lot 1386.

The Nomad Fuerte is in stock and shipping to all retailers.

The Crowned Heads Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2014 Pre-Release

The Crowned Heads Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2014

CH Las Calaveras

Wrapper: Ecuador Habano Oscuro (8th priming)

Binder: Nicaragua

Filler: Nicaragua

Sizes: LC550 (5×50), LC652 (6×52), and LC754 (7×54).

Price: TBD

Release Date: May 2014

Acquired: Sample courtesy of The Crowned Heads

It is not uncommon for a cigar company to wow you, what is uncommon is for that same company to wow you over and over again.  That can be said for a company that I am proud to say is our own Nashville cigar company, The Crowned Heads.  New release after new release has always been an exciting and highly enjoyable time.  That being said, I introduce the Las Calaveras Edición Limitada 2014.

The Las Calaveras is The Crowned Heads first project with cigar legend Don Pepin.  The cigars are being made at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua.  The  Las Calaveras is a limited production stick with a total of 3,000 boxes in three sizes.  Production sizes will be: LC550 (5×50), LC652 (6×52), and LC754 (7×54).  The cigar I smoked for this review was the LC652.  Las Calaveras will be a yearly release with a differing blend and packaging each year.

The cigar I smoked with Jon is a pre release sample that did not have the final band or packaging with it.  So, we will describe the cigar, which is the important part anyways.  This cigar sports a medium to dark brown colored wrapper that is excellently rolled.  The wrapper leaf is both oily and toothy and is very appealing to the eye.  The artwork for the production cigar takes inspiration from Mexican printmaker and illustrator, José Guadalupe Posada work,  “La Calavera Catrina.

CH Las Calaveras2

The following description of the symbolism behind Las Calaveras was provided courtesy of The Crowned Heads.

“Beginning with the Edición Limitada 2014, Las Calaveras will be an annual release that is a respectful homage to those who have passed away in the year before, and is intended to be a celebration of their lives and rememberance, rather than a mourning or a symbol of sadness and death.  Each year, we all lose a friend or loved one, or know of someone who has endured that same loss.  In todays fast-paced world, it is all too easy to forget the fragile nature that is life.  Often, in the race to gain material success, we lose sight that our true legacy are the lives we touch and the love we leave behind once we pass on.  It is in this spirit that Las Calaveras pays tribute to those who have touched our lives and shared their love.”

My favorite part of cigar reviews is always when we come to the flavor.  The Las Calaveras hits the nail on the head when it comes to an excellent blend of flavor.  This cigar has a very pleasant balance of sweet and spicy.  The cigar opens with a slight bit of red pepper on the tip of your tongue, as you continue on into the first quarter of the cigar there are some definite cedar notes present.  About a quarter of the way in your palate is greeted with hints of cocoa, as well and a pretty noticeable nuttiness that has developed.  The red pepper notes remain present throughout this cigar.  The last quarter of this cigar is what I can only describe as amazing.  The mixing of the flavors comes together so well that I was truly sad to see it end.

The Las Calaveras is a cigar that has notable body to it.  So often people confuse body for strength, but for me, body is more of sense of density.  This cigar is meaty, not in flavor, but meaty as in it leaves you with that satisfied feeling when you smoke it.  Strength wise I would rate this cigar as a high medium to mid full strength cigar.

The burn of this cigar was perfect.  One light and it burned straight and even throughout the entire smoke.  The smoke was pleasant and not overbearing.

Buy it?  I already have a box pre-ordered at one of my local cigar shops.  So the simple answer to that is yes.   As I stated in the beginning of this review, The Crowned Heads consistently knock it out of the park with every cigar release.  Thankfully with them being a local company I have the privilege of talking about and smoking these cigars with brand owners Jon Huber and Mike Conder.  You can see the passion and dedication that is put into the making of their cigars when you speak with them.  So should you try it, definitely!
