Robert P. Duran Cigars

(Miami, Florida) June 30, 2014— Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars, after a successful 2013 launch with the Azan Line of cigars is ready to come into the 2014 IPCPR with a new super-premium blend: The Roberto P. Duran Cigar Brand.

Roberto Pelayo Duran introduced the Azan line of Cigars at the 2013 IPCPR which included the Burgundy, Premium White, and Maduro Natural. Azan Cigars was very well received and can now be found in over 200 cigar shops nationwide. This year Roberto will introduce a super-premium blend under the Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars umbrella.

The Roberto P. Duran Cigar is a super-premium cigar which pays homage to his family and his family’s city of origin in Cuba.

Roberto P. Duran said: “The Duran last name is from my Mother’s side. It was my Grandfather on my maternal side which introduced me to the joys of tobacco. He lived to be 99 years old and smoked on average about 8 cigars a day. I owe my livelihood to him. I wish to honor his memory with a cigar which bares his last name and honor the city of his birth, Baracoa.”

The Roberto P. Duran Cigar is a progressive medium to strong cigar. Roberto estimates it to be 20% stronger than the Azan brand.  The binder and filler are from Nicaragua with an added leaf from Latin America added to the filler. The wrapper which was grown in Roberto’s plantation in Ecuador is very distinct one as it is an Ecuadorian Habana Criollo, very silky and with a light brown Colorado color. The color is reminiscent of the color of the original Cohiba color.

The Roberto P. Duran Cigar comes in four sizes:

  • The Rio Toa (5 X52).  Represents biggest river in Cuba. It is very significant to the eco-system and it is at the heart of Baracoa.
  • La Punta (A torpedo 6X54) the name appeals to a Torpedo.  The fort of “La Punta” built in 1802 is one of the symbols of Baracoa.
  • Tainos (6×56) is an ode to the Tainos, which were the natives of Baracoa before the arrival of Colon.
  • Cacique Guama (6×60) who was a Tainos Chief from Baracoa and great fighter against the Spanish occupation of their land.

Roberto said: “The Roberto P. Duran Cigar Brand has been a long time in the making. We used the absolute best tobacco available and we delayed the release of this cigar as we wanted to make absolutely sure that it was the best expression of a super-premium cigar.”

Roberto Pelayo Duran began his life’s work in his homeland of Havana, Cuba where tobacco grabbed a hold of him, and never let go. Supervising the production of cigar manufacturing in Cuba was only the beginning as he later went on to assemble and manage distribution of all Cuban cigar brands for Asia at The Pacific Cigar Company Ltd. Most recently, he contributed to the new global brand marketing strategy for British American Tobacco. The creation of Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars has given Roberto the platform to introduce a brand of cigars that offer the same quality, construction, and detail which he exceeded from those he supervised while in Cuba.

Crowned Heads Announces: Jericho Hill

Crowned Heads Announces: Jericho Hill

CH Jericho Hill

John R. “Johnny” Cash is widely considered to be one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. His legacy continues to inspire many, including Crowned Heads. Jericho Hill was inspired by Cash’s rendition of “Cocaine Blues,” found on Cash’s 1968 live album, “At Folsom Prison.” The song is a tale of a man, Willy Lee, who goes down a dark path brought on by the influence of whiskey and cocaine. Willy is captured in Juarez, Mexico, and is brought to justice by the sheriff from Jericho Hill.

Cash was the fourth of seven children, and Jericho Hill marks the fourth regular production release from Crowned Heads. The dark wrapper leaf utilized on Jericho Hill is a nod to “The Man in Black,” as the wrapper leaf varietal (Mexican San Andres) is a nod to the “Juarez, Mexico” reference found in “Cocaine Blues.” The four vitola names were all inspired by lyrics and music found on “At Folsom Prison,” and when recited from smallest to largest (.44S, LBV, OBS, and Willy Lee), take on a lyrical element of their own.

Jericho Hill is a hedonistic blend of the best Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos, resulting in a rich and robust taste profile that is focused, potent, and complex. The smoke is a full-throttle experience that assaults your palate at break-neck speed, races around your mouth for a hundred miles, and leaves your taste buds in a cloud of power, intensity, and excitement. Manufactured at My Father Cigars S.A., Esteli, Nicaragua, and distributed by Crowned Heads, LLC.

You can find Jericho Hill in the following vitolas:

44S – 5 1/8” x 44

LBV – 6 1/2” x 46

OBS – 4 3/4″ x 52

Willy Lee – 6″ x 54

Perfecto Cigar Holder Review

Perfecto Cigar Holder

perfecto cigar holder

Price: $20

My experience with the Perfecto Cigar Holder started a few weeks ago when Gary the owner sent me a message on Twitter asking me if I would be interested in reviewing their product. I said I would be happy to give it a try and write up a review for them. Now I will admit that prior to seeing the Perfecto Cigar Holder, I was kind of expecting it to be like all of the other cigar holders on the market. I was happy to discover it was not.

I am not a huge golfer, but I do play on occasion. I believe my line is, “I drink beer, smoke cigars, and attempt to hit the little white ball.” I do own one of the clamp down style holders which is advertised specifically for golf outings. What I noticed was I would stick my cigar on a tee in the ground rather than use the clamp down one because it would undoubtedly ruin the wrapper leaf way before I was finished with the cigar. The Perfecto Cigar Holder solves this problem.

The Perfecto Cigar Holder is designed so that your cigar sits, like it would in an ashtray. The upper ashtray section is then attached to a rugged and adjustable clamp that can damn near mount to anything. The base or feet of the clamp are made from a heavy duty rubber so they will not damage whatever you are attaching it to. So far I have had it attached on a golf cart, the rail of a friends pontoon boat, deck railing, on my patio furniture, and even on my wood privacy fence.

perfecto cigar holder 2

I know what you are thinking, that’s great that it can mount to anything, but it’s plastic it will melt. Not the case, the Perfecto Cigar Holder is formed out of durable nylon that will not melt when the heat of your cigar is applied to it. It will also not melt or deform in direct sun on over 100 degree days. I know this because some moron decided to go play golf that day, and yes that moron was me.

How is the quality? It is pretty good. I can’t say we ever really torture test things here at Keeping Your Man Card, but we rather real world test them. That being said, I dropped an 80 pound bag of concrete on it and it didn’t break or crack and it still functions flawlessly.

Okay, I am convinced it will not damage my cigars and it is a pretty rugged piece, but I smoke big ring gauge cigars, will they fit? You bethcha, the Perfecto Cigar Holder will comfortably hold up to an 80 ring gauge cigar. From petite corona to behemoth 80 ring gauge cigars, you are covered.

All this being said, should you buy it? For $20 it is definitely a worthwhile investment to make for your cigar smoking hobby. A perfect way to keep your cigar intact and safe while out and about without having to keep it in your mouth the whole time.   The Perfecto Cigar Holder gets the Keeping Your Man Card stamp of approval!

Ezra Zion FHK

Ezra Zion FHK

Ezra Zion FHK

Wrapper: Mexican San Andrés

Binder: Indonesia

Filler: Brazil and Nicaragua

Size: Belicoso 6×52 “Character”

Price: $9-$10 depending on size.

Acquired: Sample courtesy of Ezra Zion and House of Emilio

The Ezra Zion FHK is the newest cigar to be released from cigar greats Ezra Zion. The FHK was released this past January and is the second release in their Honor series.

The Ezra Zion FHK features a rich medium brown Mexican San Andrés wrapper leaf with minimal veining and just the slightest bit of toothiness. The band of the new FHK is gold and black and reads, “Ezra Zion.” This cigar also has a foot band that is black in color and reads, “FHK Honor Series.”

Upon lighting this cigar the initial flavors I am picking up on are that of molasses and a deep rich earthiness. There is also a faint creaminess present at the start of this cigar. Roughly a quarter of the way in this cigar adds some coffee notes as well as some strong wood flavorings. The remainder of this cigar stays consistent with these flavors but does gain a more noticeable creaminess to it. If I had to some up the taste of this cigar in one word, it would be rich.

The burn on the new FHK was steady and consistent throughout, which is a common trait I am seeing among the Ezra Zion cigar lines. The FHK burned even requiring no touch ups throughout the smoke. Smoke on this cigar was bountiful, thick, and white.

So, would I buy it again? Yes, I would. It is a great cigar with some really good consistent flavors. I am always excited to try new cigars coming out of Ezra Zion simply because their flavor profiles are nothing short of amazing and the construction of their sticks are spot on. That being said, head out to your local retailer and pick yourself up a couple FHK’s, and while you are there grab some of their other lines as well.

Buena Vista Cigars Makes Its Much Awaited Return To The U.S. Market

Buena Vista Cigars

(Miami, Florida) June 19, 2014— M.G.M. Cigars proudly announces the return of the Buena Vista Cigar brand of premium cigars to the United States. In 2011 Buena Vista Cigars made a brief appearance in the U.S. scene with tons of internet buzz and rave reviews from cigar media. M.G.M. Cigars has now brought back to the U.S.  public the “Worlds fines Cuban seed cigar”-Buena Vista Cigars.

The genesis of MGM Cigar can be traced to Cuba and the year 2009. At the time,  the notion of crafting a Premium Cigar with the highest quality in every aspect of its creation, without any of the restrictions imposed by the island upon the product and its processes,  gained support and backing. This support was from a group of very experienced cigar makers.

In 2011 Buena Vista Cigars was released with a sizable amount of industry hype do superb cigar construction, one of kind luxury presentation and packaging, and most importantly, the quality of the cigar itself. The Buena Vista Prominente received a 94 Rating in Smoke Magazine with one of the panelists simply stating: “The one word that comes to mind is Awesome.” The Buena Vista Robusto was featured in Cigar Journal in the article “60 Cigars that you should try.

Circumstances beyond the manufacturer’s control hindered the project’s development and successful advancement. The entire production of 200,000 cigars was stored in temperature and humidity-controlled cedar conditioning rooms, until 2013. At that point, José E. Borges Batista, founding partner and current President of MGM Cigar, arrived to the United States (after a prolonged wait) bringing with him dreams of freedom, prosperity, and his irrevocable mission of pressing ahead with the MGM Cigar project.

José E. Borges said: “The M.GM. Cigar project and first brand Buena Vista cigar was nothing more than a dream in 2009. It quickly caught flight, only to be put to bed for a short while. I am thankful to have relocated to the United States where I am free to forge ahead with our project. We look forward to re-introducing the Buena Vista Cigar brand which pays homage to all who, through music and from one generation to another, have kept the Cuban traditions, values and joie de vivre alive.”

Buena Vista Reserva 2008 is a well-balanced cigar of medium strength. It’s crafted by Cuban master rollers, who expertly mix a filler of select tobacco harvested in the Dominican Republic, aged two years (2008-2010) and then dress it with an elegant Habano 98 wrapper from Ecuador. These cigars have rested in cedar conditioning rooms for three years, surrounded by an optimal temperature and level of humidity. This process accents and balances the tobacco’s nuances, ensuring theconnoisseur a uniquely pleasurable experience.

The Buena Vista brand is presented in boxes of 10 units and comes in 9 vitolas:

Nat Sherman Timeless Nicaragua

Nat Sherman Timeless (Nicaragua)

Nat Sherman Timeless

Wrapper: Nicaraguan

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 4 x 52

Price: $6.50

Acquired: Purchased at Uptown’s Smoke Shop-Nashville, TN

The Nat Sherman Timeless Nicaragua is a cigar that had pretty much flown under our radar. Why? Not many shops in our area carry Nat Sherman products. Uptown’s Smoke Shop here in Nashville recently brought in the Timeless Nicaragua, Pat, (you know the guy that writes reviews here but hasn’t in a long time) called me the other morning and said he was going to be going over to Uptown’s to have lunch with the general manager Marcus and to pick up a couple of these as well as some other sticks. I asked him to pick me up a couple while he was there and now I am addicted.

The Nat Sherman Timeless Nicaragua is available in 21 count boxes and is available in six different sizes:

-452: 4×52

-546: 5×46

-556: 5×56

-652T: 6×52 Torpedo

-660: 6×60

-749: 7×49

Looks wise this is a classic looking cigar. The band is an off white almost yellowish color in the center with grayish black lettering that reads “Nat Sherman.” The center is trimmed in gold with a grayish black colored background on each side. In this background area is the outline of a building in gold. The cigar itself is a nice medium shade of brown and has a clean Nicaraguan wrapper leaf with minimal veining. The cigar is box-pressed with a triple cap.

Nat Sherman band

The flavor category is where this cigar really stands out! Upon first light this cigar opens with some strong earth notes, as well as a mild wood flavor and some spice. Around the half way mark some hints of cocoa start to become present. As the second half of the cigar began the wood notes took on a much more prominent role and were accompanied by a mild creaminess. The final third of the Nat Sherman Timeless gained a bit of nuttiness and coffee flavors as well as more spice and cream. Overall the flavor profile was fantastic. Strength wise I would put this cigar in the Medium category.

Initial lighting of the Nat Sherman Timeless did seem to take some extra effort. I’m unsure as to why, but it just did not want to light very quickly. However, once it was lit it did burn perfectly requiring no touch ups while smoking. The ash of this cigar was solid and only fell when ashed. The smoke was full and white.

Overall, this cigar is amazing! I would dare to say it is one of my favorite sticks as of late. Box worthy? Hell yeah, I already ordered one. Why? Let’s see; great construction, amazing flavor profile, and a good burn. What more do you need? Go out, find them, and smoke them. Then let us know what you thought.

JOYA RED: Rediscover Joya

JOYA RED: Rediscover Joya

Estelí – You probably know Joya de Nicaragua as the traditional maker of powerful cigars. Think again!

Meet JOYA RED, a new and exciting side of JDN. Some might even call it unexpected. Developed for the modern smoker by the youngest executive team in the industry, together with the most senior Master Blenders of Nicaragua. Juan Ignacio Martínez (31), President of JDN since 2013, led a team of contemporary executives and experienced Master Blenders such as Leonel Raudez (62), JDN’s Factory Manager since 1992, to create this beautiful new blend. The result? A vibrant smoke you will enjoy anytime, anywhere; classy, as always, but also a lot more fun.

If you want to get technical, we created this blend with tobaccos from our beloved home of Nicaragua. This time, we moved away from our abundant use of ligeros and thick wrappers to a blend with more visos and lower priming Habano wrappers. The binder and filler leafs were also grown in the rich and fertile lands of Estelí, Jalapa and Condega. This combination of premium tobaccos resulted in a balanced cigar with medium strength and captivating flavors, all of which allow for an extremely pleasant smoking experience.

We are producing JOYA RED in four sizes packed in 20 count boxes: • Short Churchill – 4 3⁄4 x 48
• Robusto – 5 1⁄4 x 50
• Toro – 6 x 52

• Cardinal – 5 1⁄2 x 54

JOYA RED will be available to all retail shops during the upcoming IPCPR 82nd Annual Convention and Trade Show in Las Vegas this July. As usual, Drew Estate will distribute the brand as part of our exclusive agreement for the USA, and it will also be available worldwide through our International Marketing Division and JDN’s partners.
