Jon takes a lot of inspiration from Johnny Cash, he has a six foot picture of him hanging on the wall just feet from his desk in the office.  The following excerpt about Jericho Hill is taken from the Crowned Heads website simply because, I could not have said it any better:

“John R. “Johnny” Cash is widely considered to be one of the most influential American musicians of the 20th century. His legacy continues to inspire many, including Crowned Heads. Jericho Hill was inspired by Cash’s rendition of “Cocaine Blues,” found on Cash’s 1968 live album, “At Folsom Prison.” The song is a tale of a man, Willy Lee, who goes down a dark path brought on by the influence of whiskey and cocaine. Willy is captured in Juarez, Mexico, and is brought to justice by the sheriff from Jericho Hill.

Cash was the fourth of seven children, and Jericho Hill marks the fourth regular production release from Crowned Heads. The dark wrapper leaf utilized on Jericho Hill is a nod to “The Man in Black,” as the wrapper leaf varietal (Mexican San Andres) is a nod to the “Juarez, Mexico” reference found in “Cocaine Blues.” The four vitola names were all inspired by lyrics and music found on “At Folsom Prison,” and when recited from smallest to largest (.44S, LBV, OBS, and Willy Lee), take on a lyrical element of their own.”

I’m going to preface this review by stating I am personal friends with the guys over at Crowned Heads and hang out with them on a somewhat regular basis. That being said, everything I am about to tell you about this cigar is the truth, no B.S.

Looks: First off looking at this cigar the band stands out prominently on this dark Mexican San Andres wrapper. The artwork on the band is elegant yet simple with a center badge surrounded by the words “Jericho Hill.” The colors of the band are black and gold and they really fit this cigar. The cigar itself is dark, the Mexican San Andres wrapper leaf shows minimal veins and is completed with a triple cap. The Jericho Hill is a box pressed cigar.

Taste: If you take nothing away from this review but the flavor profile, you will be doing okay. Upon lighting the Jericho Hill I immediately taste some strong wood notes as well as a definite spice. Also present are notes of cocoa powder, pepper, and a slight creaminess. All together I have smoked four of these cigars; one reason is, they are delicious, the second being there is a flavor to this cigar that I just could not figure out. Well tonight I figured it out, the Jericho Hill has a dark and smoky peaty taste to it, much like what you would get out of a scotch with prominent peat notes. The best part is it makes this cigar unlike anything that is currently on the market today and it tastes amazing!   The collaboration of the peat, cocoa powder, and the peppery spice undertones all work spectacularly together bringing you one damn delicious smoke.

Strength: Strength wise I would put the new Jericho Hill in the strong medium to light full bodied category.

Burn: Burn wise every one I have smoked has been spot on. After the initial light the Jericho Hill burns straight and even requiring no touch ups. The smoke is full and white. The Jericho Hill also provides a unique smoky scented aroma.

Buy it? Um, yeah. Jericho Hill starts shipping from Crowned Heads next week. That means you have the next couple days to make sure your retailer is getting them. If they are not you need to tell them to order them. If they still say no, you need to find a new retailer. Let’s be blunt, it is a damn good cigar and it is unique. If it helps make your decision any easier, I already have a box reserved. I am going to be bold and state that this cigar will be on almost every top 10 list that is released this year, it’s that good.  I am also told it goes very well with Jon’s wife Laura’s homemade cookies!
