MBombay Connecticut

MBombay Connecticut

MBombay

Wrapper: 2001 Ecuadorian Connecticut

Binder: Dominican Republic

Filler: Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Peru

Size: Corona 5×43

Price: $8.50

Acquired: Sample courtesy of Bombay Tobak

The MBombay cigar is one that I have to admit I did not know much about prior to receiving some samples from Bombay Tobak. I had seen them once in Burns Tobacconist in downtown Chattanooga during the Chattanooga Tweet Up this last summer. After receiving these samples I did a bit of research and found that they are a boutique company that currently offers two blends, the Ecudorian Connecticut that I am reviewing here, as well as, a Brazilian Mata Fina.

Sizes available:

-Belicoso (5 x 52),

-Churchill (7 x 48),

-Corona (5 x 43),

-Perfecto (6 x 50)

-Robusto (4 1/2 x 48)

Looks: Right off the bat, the first thing my eyes gravitate to is the very large band that this cigar sports. The band itself features an array of colors ranging from gold to red to green to purple. The artwork of the band features floral patterns as well as a peacock in the middle with a lion and an elephant on the sides. The artwork seems to draw inspiration from Indian culture, at least that is what it reminds me of. The only writing on the band is “MBOMBAY” located in gold set to a red background on the bottom of the band.

MBombay band

Stripping away the band, the cigar features a light brown Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper from 2001. The wrapper leaf is clean and smooth with minimal veining. The MBombay is rolled very nicely and even has a closed foot at the bottom.

Flavor: Upon lighting the MBombay I am initially greeted with some pleasant spice notes along with a slight leathery taste. As I proceed with smoking this cigar a certain sweetness begins to develop that will remain present throughout the remainder of the smoke. About mid way into the cigar I start to detect some slight coffee and floral notes. The coffee flavors grow as the smoke continues on and pick up an almost cinnamon flavor. Overall the flavor profile is very enjoyable and pleasant.

Burn: The burn on the MBombay Connecticut was pretty good only requiring one small touch up whilst smoking. The burn remained even and the smoke was full and white.  The ash of the MBombay was quite impressive, I got about half way before it finally fell.

Buy it? Yes. For a smaller company that was relatively unknown to me, they are putting out one hell of a smoke. The flavor profile works well with all of the different flavors pairing extremely well together. So, that being said, hop on their website, (located below) and find a retailer near you. Want your retailer to carry MBombay cigars? Have them contact them directly as they handle distribution themselves.

Black Abyss by JR Cigar

Black Abyss by JR Cigar

Black abyss

Wrapper: San Andres

Binder: Corojo

Filler: Cuban Seed Criollo 98/Olor/Dominicano/Piloto Cubano

Size: Banshee 5×50

Price: Box priced, $59.95-$74.95

Acquired: Sample courtesy of JR Cigar

The Black Abyss is a new release that comes to us exclusively from cigar retailer JR Cigar. JR Cigar has teamed up with cigar legend José Blanco to create this new masterpiece of pleasure. The cigar is made in the Dominican Republic at José Blanco’s factory, Tabacalera Palma and is available in four sizes:

-Banshee 5×50

-Wraith 6×52

-Hydra 6×52 Torpedo

-Cerberus 6×60

Appearance: Looking at this cigar, the first thing I notice is the bands. The Black Abyss features two bands; the main band has an array of colors in the tan, brown, black, and red fields. The band reads, “Black Abyss” in the middle in red and black with “Hand” and “Made” on each side. A graphic of what appears to be fire surrounds the wording. The second band, a foot band is tan with the continuing flame pattern burning downward.   I will be the first to say that I am a traditionalist when it comes to the artwork and designs on cigar bands. The artwork on the bands of the Black Abyss is definitely more modern and graphic.

The cigar itself features a medium brown San Andres wrapper leaf that is fairly toothy. The wrapper leaf has some medium sized veins running through it and a perfect cap.

Flavor: This is the category in which this cigar really stands out, of course when a master like José Blanco has his hands in the making of a cigar you should know it is going to taste good. Upon initial light I notice that this cigar is fairly sweet with some prominent cocoa notes. Along with the cocoa notes is a creamy almost chocolate milk flavor present. About a quarter of the way into this stick I start to pick up on some coffee flavors as well. As the cigar proceeds I pick up on some traditional wood cedar notes as well as hints of leather. Most of the flavors remain present throughout the smoke and are joined about half way by the ever slightest bit of a floral note.

Strength: Solid medium to light full body.

Burn: Excellent. I was smoking this cigar outside on a somewhat windy day and it only required one small touch up to prevent an uneven burn. The smoke was thick and white.

Buy it? That would be a definite yes. I will admit that upon first seeing the cigar the artwork kind of put me off. However that thought was completely put out of my mind after the first couple puffs. The flavor profile is nothing short of unique and exquisite. The Black Abyss makes for an excellent all day smoke whether you are firing up for breakfast or late at night after a full meal, this is a stick that is sure to satisfy.   If nothing else, you cannot beat the price. The pricing on this cigar is ridiculously low for the quality and taste that it provides. Buy it, smoke it, and tell us your thoughts!

Jaxsin Cigar Co. Tavern Residence Connecticut

Jaxsin Cigar Co. Tavern Residence Connecticut

Jaxsin Connecticut lancero

Wrapper: Connecticut

Binder: Dominican

Filler: Blend of 4 different Dominican tobaccos.

Size: 7×38 Lancero

Price: $5.95-$6.75

Acquired: Sample courtesy of Bryan Jackson of Jaxsin Cigar Co.

A few weeks back I attended the fourth annual Chattanooga Tweet Up hosted by Burns Tobacconist.   About an hour after arriving I ran into my friend Bryan Jackson, owner of Jaxsin Cigar Co. Bryan being the gentleman he is noticed I did not have a stick in my hand and offered me one. He opened his case and asked if I wanted a mild, medium, or full bodied smoke. It was my first stick of the day so I said hit me with a mild one. Bryan then pulls out a Connecticut wrapped lancero that is his “event only” stick. Being a lancero “whore” this was followed by excitement and enjoyment!

Looks: It’s a lancero! I know, I get all giddy inside when I see lanceros. The Jaxsin Cigar Co. Connecticut features a light brown wrapper leaf with minimal veins. The wrapper leaf itself has just the slightest bit of toothiness to it. The band is the standard Jaxsin Cigar Co. band, black background trimmed in yellow with the Jaxsin four-leaf clover logo dead center and reads, “Jaxsin Cigar Co.” There are two more four-leaf clovers on each side, one with “Handmade” imprinted over it.

Taste: It’s delicious! Immediately upon lighting the Jaxsin Cigar Co. Connecticut I was hit with a strong creaminess that would remain present throughout the entire smoke. On the front end I detected a slight toasted nuttiness and some prominent cedar wood flavors. These wood notes would be the most prominent flavors throughout the smoke and would grow in intensity making this a very full flavored and creamy tasting cigar.

Strength: This is a mild and smooth Connecticut cigar, excellent to pair with coffee or chocolate milk in the morning.

Burn: Spot on. Lanceros either burn perfectly or they are all over the place needing touch ups. I was happy to report that the Jaxsin Connecticut lancero burned evenly throughout. Ash was firm occasionally falling while smoking. Smoke was full and white.

First off, if I have anything to say about it, Bryan will turn this into a regular production stick.  The regular production Jaxsin Cigar Co. Connecticut is available in a 4 1/2 x 48 Rothschild and a 6 x 52 Toro.  The flavor profile is amazing, which I have said before is not always the easiest thing to pull off in a Connecticut. Full flavor and a smooth and mild strength make this an excellent stick for the first smoke of the day.  Buy it, smoke it, thank me afterwards!

Crowned Heads-Tennessee Waltz

TN-Waltz

“Tennessee Waltz” is a song that is near and dear to my heart.

It was the song that was playing in the dance hall when my maternal Grandfather met my Grandmother. I vividly recall him whistling that tune throughout my childhood. It’s a song that was made popular in 1950 by Patti Page, and has been recorded by everyone from Sam Cooke to Otis Redding to Norah Jones.

The state of Tennessee is also near and dear to my heart. I met my wife here, my family is here, and of course, Crowned Heads is headquartered here in Nashville. Crowned Heads owes a great deal to the people of Tennessee for their support from the very beginning. And so it is with a sincere spirit of gratitude that we present “Tennessee Waltz.”

Tennessee Waltz is manufactured by My Father Cigars S.A. in Esteli, Nicaragua, and is the first Crowned Heads cigar to utilize a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. This unique medium-to-full bodied cigar is available exclusively in our great state of Tennessee. We hope you will enjoy this cigar that means so much to all of us here at Crowned Heads–and we thank you for your support which allows us to ‘Carve Our Own Path.’
