About Shady Records

Fifteen years ago Eminem co-founded New York and Detroit based Shady Records with his manager Paul Rosenberg in a venture with Interscope Records. The label quickly became an international powerhouse with the label’s debut release, D 12’s chart-topping, double-platinum album Devil’s Night and the quadruple-platinum Music From and Inspired by the Motion Picture 8 Mile.

Shady’s next move was signing Queens rapper 50 Cent along with Dr.Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment. 50’s 2003 major label full-length debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’ was an instant classic with sales of over eight million units, turning 50 into a household name.

Mid-decade saw the release of platinum seller Eminem Presents: The Re-Up as well as 50 Cent’s sophomore Shady album The Massacre, and D 12’s follow-up, 2004’s D12 World. Obie Trice’s 2003 release, Cheers, was a critical favorite and earned gold status. Bad Meets Evil (a collaboration between Eminem and Royce Da 5’9”) took Shady into yet another decade of topping the charts with 2011’s gold-seller Hell the Sequel.

In 2011 the label signed both rap supergroup Slaughterhouse (comprised of Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I) and Gadsden, Alabama rapper Yelawolf which ushered in the “Shady 2.0” era. The label released Slaughterhouse’s Welcome to: Our House and Yela’s Radioactive both to critical acclaim.

On November 24th, Shady Records releases a double-disc compilation, SHADYXV, featuring a disc of brand-new music and a second disc showcasing the label’s iconic singles, club hits, and street records of the last decade and a half. The project includes 50 Cent’s monumental “In Da Club”, D-12’s classic hit “Purple Pills,” and Eminem’s Academy Award and Grammy-winning anthem, “Lose Yourself,” the theme from his smash film debut 8 Mile. New albums from Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse are slated for early 2015 positioning Shady Records to continue its stride, with over 30 million albums sold worldwide.

Padilla Cava

Padilla Cava

padilla cava

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 5x 50 Robusto

Price: $7.50

Acquired: Purchased at Big Star Cigar-Mt. Juliet, TN

The Padilla Cava 550 is one of the newest cigars to be offered out of the Padilla wheelhouse. The Padilla Cava was released earlier this year in July at the IPCPR trade show and is available in four sizes, the 550 (5×50), the 660 (6×60), 770 (7×60), and 860 (8×60) . The size I smoked for this review was the 550.

Looks: First off this cigar sports two bands, the standard band that features the Padilla signature lion logo engulfed in colors of red and gold followed by a large foot band that again features the logo and reads “Padilla Cava.” The Ecuadorian Habano wrapper on this cigar was deep brown in color and was a very oily wrapper leaf. The wrapper leaf of the Padilla Cava was also toothy with some medium veins present.

Flavor: The flavor profile of the new Padilla Cava was overall very pleasant. Upon first light I was greeted with flavors of charred oak and nuts, there was also a definite saltiness present. About mid way through the Padilla Cava the nuttiness became a much more stronger and dominant flavor in this cigar. The mid way point also began to develop some medium spice notes.  Toward the end of this cigar the primary flavor notes are that of spice, wood, and nuts.

Burn: Burn on the Padilla Cava was fairly good only requiring one touch up whilst smoking. Ash held firm only falling when ashed and the smoke was full and white.

Buy it? Padilla has been a brand that has always interested me. I want to say the first time I smoked one it was in a sampler from an online retailer and I loved it. Since then I have always been interested in trying their new lines, however not many of the shops in my area carry the Padilla lines. That being said, now that my friends at Big Star Cigar have started carrying them, I think I will be trying many more.

Proceeds from nationwide sale will be largest donation in charity’s history

Miami, Florida-  Viva Republica, a premium handmade cigar manufacturer, and Operation: Cigars for Warriors, a nonprofit dedicated to serving U.S. military members serving  in combat zones, are pleased to announce a Veteran’s Day limited-edition release cigar that will be sold to benefit the charity.

The cigar will retail for $6, with all proceeds from the wholesale of the cigar to authorized retailers going directly to Operation: Cigars for Warriors. The limited edition run of 2,000 cigars is the first of its kind for Viva Republica and will ship to stores next week on Veteran’s Day, November 10th, 2014.

“For Veteran’s Day this year I wanted to do something for an organization that I truly believe in,” said Jason Holly, owner of Viva Republica. “The volunteers of Operation: Cigars for Warriors work tirelessly to get cigars to the men and women fighting for our country.”

Not only will this special run be a first for Viva Republica, it will be a first for Operation: Cigars for Warriors as well.  The proceeds from the sales of the cigars are expected to be the largest single cash donation in the nonprofit’s history.

“The support of Viva Republica could not have come at a better time,” said Storm BoenChairmen of the Board for Operation: Cigars for Warriors.  “Every month we have more requests from active duty troops than our all-volunteer organization can fill and the donation from the sale of Viva’s cigars will be used to defray our shipping costs when sending cigars to troops overseas.”

Retailers can order the cigars from Miami Cigar & Co., the exclusive American distributor of Viva Republica.

The cigar will measure 5 1/8 ” x 42” and is a medium-plus smoke. It was designed to be a smoke that is bold and flavorful.

“This release features a prototype Nicaraguan wrapper I have been working with,” said Holly.  “In terms of the blend, it’s a bit different style than the regular production portfolio.”

Drew Estate Announces “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” Premium Handmade Cigars

Drew Estate Announces “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” Premium Handmade Cigars

DE_PVW_BOX_VISTAS

Miami, FL – Drew Estate announced today their exclusive manufacturing agreement with Pappy & Company, as well as the new “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” premium handmade cigar. This new cigar will be produced at Drew Estate’s Estelí, Nicaragua factory and is being made in partnership with Pappy & Company. Pappy & Company is the family-owned merchandise division of Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery, producers of legendary whiskies including Pappy Van Winkle bourbon.

The “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” cigar will be a long-filler, premium cigar made totally by hand in very small batches at Drew Estate in Estelí, Nicaragua. This historic cigar features a robust Ecuadorian Habano Wrapper and well-aged Nicaraguan Filler tobaccos, personally selected by Drew Estate’s Co-Founder, Jonathan Drew. It is the perfect choice for pairing with any of the Van Winkle bourbon and rye products.

Speaking from the Pappy & Company headquarters in Louisville, KY, Carrie Van Winkle, great granddaughter of the legendary Pappy Van Winkle, said that, “we’re extremely happy to be working with Drew Estate on this project, as both of our companies are known for their high quality, handmade products. When we approached Drew Estate with the idea of working together on a premium cigar, we knew we’d made the right choice. The finished cigar is the perfect pairing for our family’s whiskeys, and we hope you enjoy them as much as we do.”

The strength level of the “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” cigar is “Medium Plus,” which allows both new smokers and experienced aficionados to enjoy the blend. “It’s a well rounded, sophisticated cigar, with body and a hearty expression,” says Jonathan Drew. “Drew Estate is known for passion and innovation, and making premium cigars is our ‘raison d’être’ [reason to be]. The ‘Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve’ premium cigar is truly a showcase of our passion for cigar-making.”

The partnership between the Van Winkle family and Drew Estate will allow people to experience a flavor combination that is unique, and one that will remain consistent through time. Drew Estate is respected for cigar and whiskey pairings, so when the time came to create the Pappy Van Winkle cigar blend, they knew exactly what they wanted to do; “exceptional” was an understatement.

The final blend is the perfect compliment to any Van Winkle spirit, but Drew Estate’s favorite match with the “Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve” cigar is the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye. The spice notes from the rye bring out the pepper and graham cracker notes in the Pappy Van Winkle cigar.

The cigars will be available for pre-order exclusively through the Pappy & Company website starting November 7, 2014. For more information about the new cigar, please contact Johnny Brooke at jbrooke@drewestate.com.

The Mason Dixon Project by The Crowned Heads

The Mason Dixon Project

Mason Dixon Project

The Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition:

Mason Dixon Project Southern

Edition: Southern

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 6×52

Price: $10

Acquired: Purchased at Stogies in Franklin, TN

The Mason Dixon Project is the newest creation to come out of The Crowned Heads in Nashville, TN. Made at the My Father factory, The Mason Dixon Project is a two blend limited edition release of 1,250 boxes of 20 cigars in each edition/blend. Brick and mortar shops in the North will receive the Northern edition, while shops in the South will receive the Southern edition. As with their prior releases, the guys at Crowned Heads turned to history for the name and came up with The Mason Dixon Project.

Looks: The first thing your eyes are drawn to on The Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition is the bold and prominent band. The band is black and trimmed with gold and features gold lettering that reads, “The Mason Dixon Project” across the middle. The words “Mason” and “Dixon” are split by a gold stripe with black stars in it. The cigar itself features a very light colored Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper leaf that looks like it is almost one continuous and perfect piece of wrapper leaf. There are some very minimal veins to the wrapper leaf on this cigar and it is finished off at the top by a perfectly executed triple cap.

Taste: Upon first light you are greeted with a very mild spice and a somewhat heavy creaminess. The creaminess found in this cigar is one of the prominent flavors throughout the smoke. A few puffs in and a bit of a charred oak barrel taste begins to develop along with some pleasant cedar notes. A quarter of the way through and I notice the creaminess is complimented by some very mild but amazing cocoa notes. About half way into this cigar I noticed that the spice notes have bumped up slightly in intensity as well as the cedar and charred oak flavors. This cigar finishes excellently with a great combination of the aforementioned flavors playing part in the finish.

Strength: Mild to light medium.

Burn: Perfect one light burn throughout the entire smoke. The ash of The Mason Dixon Project held firm even on a somewhat windy day and only fell when ashed. Something I did notice about this cigar was the abundance of thick white smoke that it produced, as I sometimes like to say, “it was smoking like a freight train.”

Buy it? Here is what I have learned about anything that comes out of the Crowned Heads brand, it is going to be damn delicious. Being a local Nashvillian and having the privilege of being friends with these guys, I often get to try their new blends before they hit the shelves. I didn’t have that opportunity with The Mason Dixon Project, that being said, I did not hesitate to purchase a box before having tried it. The company has proven itself time and time again to me, I like their stuff and The Mason Dixon Project Southern Edition was no different. The cigar is perfectly constructed which results in a great burn and the flavor profile is great when you are looking for a mild to light medium cigar. This cigar has easily taken one of the top spots as my go to breakfast cigar.

Welcome to part 2. Part 2? You didn’t think we would review just one cigar in a two cigar limited edition would you?

The Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition:

Mason Dixon Project Northern

Edition: Northern

Wrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 6×52

Price: $10

Acquired: Sample courtesy of Crowned Heads

The Northern edition of The Mason Dixon Project is a complete one eighty from the Southern edition.

Looks: The Northern edition of The Mason Dixon Project features a gold band with black trim and lettering that once again reads, “The Mason Dixon Project.” The middle stripe of the band is black with gold stars dividing the words “Mason” and “Dixon.” So basically we just could have said the colors are reversed, but we like to be a little bit more thorough than that here at KYMC. The wrapper leaf again is the complete opposite of the Southern Edition. The Northern Edition features a dark brown Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. This wrapper is toothy and gritty with some medium veins running through it. Similar to its friend to the South, it has an excellently applied triple cap.

Taste: This is Connecticut Broadleaf with balls! Upon first light I am hit with spice, pepper, and grit. A faint taste of citrus begins to develop about a third of the way into this cigar. At the half way mark I notice that there is a nuttiness as well as a deep smoky flavor developing. The nuttiness becomes one of the stronger flavors as this cigar winds down with the spice somewhat mellowing out.

Strength: Full body and full strength. The Mason Dixon Project Northern Edition is strong but not overbearing.

Burn: I could just copy and paste the burn from the Southern Edition because like it, the burn is spot on and even requiring no touch ups. Ash is firm and smoke is bountiful and full and rolling on like a freight train.

Buy it? If you live in the North jump on a box of these. If you live in the South, well that is what shipping was designed for. If you are looking for a fuller cigar that is loaded with flavor, this is it. The Northern Edition is a great after dinner smoke, I recommend a good steak before and a nice glass of scotch to enjoy with it.

Two limited edition cigars, one great company. The Crowned Heads hits it out of the park again with The Mason Dixon Project Southern and Northern Editions.
