La Aurora Untamed

La Aurora Untamed

La Aurora UntamedWrapper: Connecticut Broadleaf

Binder: Dominican Corojo

Filler: Dominican and Nicaraguan

Size: Robusto 5 x 50

Price: $7.50

Acquired: Samples courtesy of Miami Cigar Co. and La Aurora.

The La Aurora Untamed is the newest cigars to come out of the Dominican based company La Aurora and was released at this years IPCPR trade show. The Untamed cigar will be available in five sizes;

-Robusto 5x 50

-Toro 5 ½ x 54,

-Corona Gorda 6 x 47

-Belicoso 6 ¼ x 52

-Gran 7×60

All of the sizes will be available in 20 count boxes with the exception of the Gran which will come in 16 count boxes. Prices range from $7.50-$11.

Looks: Starting off this is definitely a new and fresh look for La Aurora who in the past has always maintained a very traditional cigar band in my opinion. The new Untamed features a band that is bold and bright with colors of black, gold, and red. The centerpiece of the band is a roaring lion, which is the La Aurora logo. Across the side and back reads, “UNTAMED by LA AURORA.” The Untamed has a secondary foot band as well that reads, “UNTAMED” with claw marks in the background. The cigar itself has a dark Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that has a very nice oily sheen to it. The wrapper leaf is a bit toothy and has some small to medium veins running through it, as well as, a triple cap.

Taste: Upon lighting, the Untamed immediately starts out with a very strong earthy flavor, as well as, a slight red pepper punch on the back of your tongue. About a quarter of the way into this cigar a very light and mild nuttiness begins to develop. Between the quarter and half way mark a notable wood flavor begins to join the earthy and nutty flavors. The red pepper notes have also become more prominent and can be tasted on the back end of each puff. Throughout the last half of this cigar the flavors have maintained and have finished pleasantly. The flavor of this cigar overall is very good.

Strength: Medium bodied.

Burn: Overall the burn was pretty good only requiring one small touch up at the beginning to keep the burn even. After that, this cigar burned evenly throughout. The smoke was plentiful and had a grayish white color to it.

Buy it? Why not. Any cigar coming out of a company like La Aurora is going to have the quality you look for in a good cigar. The Untamed is no different; good quality, full flavor, and a great price point make this cigar one you definitely need to give a try. Smoke it and let us know what you though.

Jericho Hill Shots

Jericho Hill Shots

      Jericho Hill Shots

Wrapper: Mexican San Andres

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: Shots 4×42 petit corona

Price: $5.95

Acquired: Samples courtesy of Crowned Heads

Jericho Hill Shots is the first size extension of the ever-popular Jericho Hill cigar from Crowned Heads. The new Jericho Hill Shots will be available in 50 count boxes and at a price of $5.95 a stick are a very affordable cigar option. Production will be limited to 1,000 boxes for a total of 50,000 sticks a year. Shots will be produced each winter.

In case you are short on time, here is the cliff notes version. It is a Jericho Hill cigar in a more compact and full flavored size. In short, it’s awesome.

Looks: It’s a mini Jericho Hill! The new Shots size shares the existing Jericho Hill black and gold band. The cigar itself has a very nice and dark Mexican San Andres wrapper leaf with minimal veins and is finished off with a triple cap.

Taste: Boom! This cigar opens with strong wood notes and spice. Upon smoking, the flavors of cocoa and pepper start to become ever more present. I do have to say out of the three sticks that I have smoked so far, something amazing happens with the flavor in the final third of this cigar. The flavors all culminate into an extremely pleasant taste that makes me sad to see it come to an end. The creaminess that Crowned Heads sticks are known for is present throughout the smoke.

Burn: Spot on. Like I said above, I have smoked three of these sticks, all have burned perfectly with a clean, crisp, even burn throughout. Smoke was thick and white.

Buy it? It’s the perfect size for anyone who is short on time but does not want to sacrifice flavor. Taking the dog for a walk? Jericho Hill Shots. Lunch break? Jericho Hill Shots. Waiting for the kids? Well, you get the point. Find them, buy them, and let us know what you think!

Don’t forget to check out the original review on the Jericho Hill we did back in August 2014: http://www.keepingyourmancard.com/2014/08/02/crowned-heads-jericho-hill/

Drew Estate Announces “Pope of Greenwich Village” Cigar As Part of Smoke Inn Microblend Series

Drew Estate Announces “Pope of Greenwich Village” Cigar As Part of Smoke Inn Microblend Series

pope of greenwich

Miami, FL – Drew Estate announced today that they would be participating in Smoke Inn’s Microblend series with a new cigar named “Pope of Greenwich Village”. The new cigar will be released in Spring 2015 and will be available through Smoke Inn’s South Florida-based retail stores and website.

The “Pope of Greenwich Village” will be offered in a 6×40 panatela vitola and sold in Soft Pack 10s (pictured below). The MSRP for the 10-pack will be $85.00, with a single cigar price of $8.50. The blend features a Mexican San Andres wrapper with Connecticut Stalk Cut Habano binder and Brazilian Mata Fina and Nicaragua fillers.

The cigar was blended by Willy Herrera, Drew Estate’s Master Blender, who had this to say about the blend: “This cigar will appeal to fans of our other maduro blends, including Undercrown, Nica Rustica, MUWAT, and Liga Privada. Anyone who has smoked cigars that I’ve blended knows I like spice, but I didn’t go overboard here. The blend is balanced, bold, and just really good. The small ring gauge definitely amplifies the flavor, and I think this is a winner.”

The “Pope of Greenwich Village” cigar will receive a pre-release launch at Smoke Inn’s private VIP Dinner on February 20, 2015, the night before their annual event, The Great Smoke. Approximately 100 5-packs will be given to attendees of the VIP dinner, held at Ruth’s Chris Steak House of West Palm Beach.

When asked about the release, Abe Dababneh, the owner and founder of Smoke Inn, commented that, “I’m very excited to have my friends at Drew Estate joining us in Smoke Inn’s Microblend series. Drew Estate’s new Microblend has been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. They really delivered with the ‘Pope of Greenwich Village’. This is a great cigar, meaty, earthy, and tasty. I’m sure they’ll sell out quick, so make sure to grab your pre-order before it’s too late.”

“UNTAMED” BY LA AURORA, BEST 2014 DOMINICAN CIGAR OF THE YEAR AWARD BY THE DOMINICAN CIGAR REVIEW

“UNTAMED” BY LA AURORA, BEST 2014 DOMINICAN CIGAR OF THE YEAR AWARD

BY THE DOMINICAN CIGAR REVIEW

Untamed by La Aurora

(Miami, Florida) January 28, 2015 – The Dominican Cigar Review, noted as the most important cigar magazine in the Dominican Republic, has just made public its choice of “Untamed” by La Aurora as Cigar of the Year for  2014. La Aurora “Untamed” was unveiled last July in the IPCPR Show, in Las Vegas.

The Dominican Cigar Review panel of experts concluded that due to Untamed’ s perfect balance between flavor and body,  and superior construction,  a FIVE STAR rating and the award of Best Dominican Cigar in the year 2014 should be awarded.

Untamed by La Aurora is a new development, that combines the tradition of a century, working with the best tobaccos in Cibao Valley, with the will to stay ahead of the curve to provide the market new and distinct products.

La Aurora’s team has achieved an incredible cigar that has no seco leaves in its blend: three different ligero Dominican leaves and a viso Nicaragua, with a binder harvested in Cibao Valley, Dominican Republic, and a precious Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper from the USA.

Guillermo León, president of La Aurora, has shown his satisfaction for the award: “La Aurora’s team has created a really incredible cigar, going beyond our traditional products.  They have successfully created an innovative product that works because of the enormous quality of its tobacco leaves”. Untamed is, for La Aurora, a step towards the future for a company which boasts a centenary in tradition.

Untamed by La Aurora Robusto is 5 x 50, but the complete gama is:

Gran Untamed 7×58

Belicoso 6 1/4 x 52

Gran Toro 6 x 58

Toro 5 3/4 x 54
