Caldwell Cigar Co. is a company that over the last year has intrigued me more and more. I personally had not heard that much about the company until a few months prior to last years Chattanooga Tweet Up. Much of this being mainly in part to none of my local shops carrying the product line and my being away from reading all the cigar pages due to extensive work demands. At the Tweet Up, I had the chance to meet Caldwell Cigar Co. owner Robert Caldwell and try some of their sticks that were in stock at Burns Tobacconists in Chattanooga. Let’s just say that after smoking those first couple sticks, I wanted to try some more.

Fast forward to a couple months ago and I am at The Smoker’s Abbey in East Nashville. I noticed they carried the Sevillana one of Caldwell Cigar Co. Seleccion Junior Varsity. It was a Connecticut and they carried it in a corona size, I was sold.

After letting the Sevillana’s that I purchased rest for a bit, I finally decided to give it a try the other morning.

Smoking Conditions: Morning, approximately 10 am CST. Sunny with a slight breeze, temperature of 67 degrees.

Looks: This cigar has a very light colored Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper leaf that has some small veins running through it. The wrapper leaf is toothy in texture and the cigar is finished on top with a pig-tailed cap.

The band of the Caldwell Cigar Co. Sevillana is white in color with gold writing and design. At the top it reads, “SEVILLANA” with “Liberty and Greed” in small print below with a bull that looks to have a sword in its back. The remainder of the band is trimmed with what appears to be Asian style hand fans and some flowers at the bottom. There is a brown and gold bar that runs through the sides of the band that reads, “LA REPUBLICA” and “2014”

Pre-Light: Prior to lighting this cigar, it has a strong aroma of hay. On the pre-light draw I taste hay, grass, and raisins.

Taste: The first thing I notice after lighting the Sevillana is that it is distinctively creamy. The raisin flavor that I tasted on the pre-light is definitely present as well as the slightest bit of citrus. These flavors are the primary flavors throughout the smoke, at the half I did get a little bit of mild white pepper notes. The end finished with a very pleasant nuttiness.  This cigar is clean and consistent with its flavor notes.

Strength: Mild

Burn: Perfect, lit it once and it burned straight and even throughout.

Buy it? At the price point this cigar is at, everyone should give it a try. If you are a fan of good Connecticut cigars and are looking for a mild morning or all day smoke, then this is something that should definitely be in your wheelhouse. On a personal note, I am a huge fan of Connecticut cigars done right, this one is. That being said, I see a box or two of these in my future.
