LEGENDARY CUBAN CIGAR BLENDER CRISTANO “SANTO” CARDENAS JOINS AS MASTER BLENDER

(Miami, Florida) May 28, 2015— Roberto Pelayo Duran is proud to announce that the legendary Cristano Cardenas, better known as “Santo” has joined the Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars team as their Master Blender. Santo, a Cuban National, will oversee operations in the Nicatabaco SA factory in Estelí, Nicaragua.

Santo Cardenas’ resume encompasses over 55 years of experience, beginning in 1960 with H.Upmann at the Montecristo Factory in Havana, Cuba. Santo quickly gained notoriety for his blending skills, and became head of production for “Rey Del Mundo” Cigar Factory, and later head of production for the Partagas Factory. Santo became well-known globally, as he visited over 30 countries for promotion and demonstrations, as a representative for Cuban made cigars. Santo is considered by contemporaries as one of the most important cigar rollers and blenders in Cuba.

Roberto Pelayo Duran said: “Santo Cardenas was one of my many influences when I started my career in tobacco, when he took me under his wing at the Partagas Factory. Santo is known the World over, and I am only honored to be working alongside one of my mentors. My goal with Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars was to create the type of cigar that I enjoyed in Cuba. Having Santo on the team only ensures that our product will go beyond even my standards.”

Santo Cardenas said: “After many years of working with tobacco, my craft is still my passion. I am happy to once again work alongside my old friend and student, Roberto. This new beginning with Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars, gives me the opportunity to share my passion with a wider audience.

Roberto P. Duran began his life’s work in his homeland of Havana, Cuba where tobacco grabbed a hold of him, and never let go. Supervising the production of cigar manufacturing in Cuba was only the beginning as he later went on to assemble and manage distribution of all Cuban cigar brands for Asia at The Pacific Cigar Company Ltd. The creation of Roberto P. Duran Premium Cigars has given Roberto the platform to introduce a brand of cigars that offer the same quality, construction, and detail which he exceeded from those he supervised while in Cuba. Roberto P. Duran’s brands include Azan, Roberto P Duran Signature, Neya, and Baracoa.

Marc Thibodeau, a former U.S. Navy Officer and Aviator for 20 years, took home three Air Medals with V for Valor, after flying combat missions in Kuwait, and Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. After retiring as a U.S. Navy Commander, Marc transitioned into his lifelong passion of cigars. Marc worked in management at a cigar retailer, prior to coming on board with Miami Cigar & Company. Marc will oversee sales for Miami Cigar & Co. in the mid-Atlantic region, to include: Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., North Carolina, and South Carolina. Willy Marante is a young addition to the MCC group. The Miami born, Cuban-American “who lives, breathes, and eats cigar culture,” as he states, was handpicked by Jason Wood, VP of Miami Cigar & Co. He will be based in his hometown of Miami, as he will oversee inside sales for Miami Cigar & Co.

Jason Wood said: “We kicked off the 2014 IPCPR with a bang, as we celebrated 25 years in the business. I am happy to share that as we head into the 2015 IPCPR, we are bigger and better, and haven’t lost any momentum. On the contrary, we have continued to grow, and gained a rhythm I feel quite proud of. I believe our supporters will see this excitement, and dedication reflected in our products and our growing team. Crowned Heads-Snake Oil aka Blood Medicine

The Crowned Heads-Snake Oil aka Blood Medicine

Snake Oil

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 5 ½ x 48 Super Corona

Price: Priceless

Acquired: Event only sticks acquired at The Smokey Cigar 2-Brentwood, TN

Before you continue reading, I would like to note that due to trademark issues the name Snake Oil is being changed to Blood Medicine.  In total there were roughly 200 cigars produced with the Snake Oil band.  Blood Medicine which is the exact same cigar will come unbanded.

Snake Oil (Blood Medicine), there are quite a few things that come to mind when I think of those two words. Potions, spells, and voodoo are just a few. What it is generally not, is something you would want to stick in your mouth. (Insert tasteless joke here) What it actually is, is the newest cigar to come out of the crazy minds of the guys over at Crowned Heads. A limited edition event only stick, and I mean limited, and I mean event only. You cannot buy it, I watched a guy try to negotiate with Wes from Crowned Heads for almost an hour. Wes’s response every time was, “buy a box and you get three.” Who the hell wants three? I want boxes of them. I guess I can always take out a mortgage on my house so I can keep buying boxes to get three…

Naturally when I first heard about this, I was intrigued. For some reason, Snake Oil (Blood Medicine) seemed like something I wanted to try. Apparently my sick and twisted mind works that way. As the days counted down to the Crowned Heads event at one of my local shops, The Smokey Cigar 2, my anticipation grew and grew. I showed up early at the event, walked in said hi to Patrick the general manager and to Wes, and bought a box. I then proceeded to fire up a Snake Oil. That weekend I fired up another and as I sit here to write this review, I am firing up my final one. (Insert tear rolling down face)

Smoking Conditions: Evening about 67 degrees.

Looks: The band of this cigar is plain, it is white and simply reads, “Snake Oil” in black letters. The new Blood Medicine sticks will come unbanded. The cigar itself has a medium colored Ecuadorian Habano wrapper with a slight oily sheen to it. The wrapper leaf has the ever slightest bit of toothiness to it along with minimal veining.

Taste: Well damn if they didn’t do it again. This cigar is a straight up home run for Crowned Heads that makes it even worse that this is an event on cigar! Upon lighting this cigar the first tastes that I am picking up on are that of earth, peat, and some white pepper on the back end. A few puffs in and a rich nuttiness has also become present. The flavors of this stick remain consistent and delicious over the remainder of the smoke.   The flavors do somewhat intensify by the end and finish with this cigar being excellent.

Strength: Medium

Burn: Spot on. Even burn with a good amount of white smoke.

Buy it? Considering it isn’t possible to buy these, I will say this; refinance your car, boat, or house. Now take that money and buy a bunch of boxes of other Crowned Heads products at your local shops event, you are going to smoke them anyways. Now if my math is correct, ten boxes of Crowned Heads sticks will land you thirty Snake Oils (Blood Medicines). At the rate I am going I will need to purchase at least thirty three boxes, and maybe I can get them to throw in one extra stick to make an even hundred. Go support your shop at the next Crowned Heads event, support a great craft cigar company that cares about their product and the industry, and smoke yourself some Snake Oil, (Blood Medicine) and tell me you disagree with me. Hell, if you do, just send them to me for proper disposal by fire.

Drew Estate Launches New Nica Rustica “Belly” Vitola

Drew Estate Launches New Nica Rustica “Belly” Vitola

Nica Rustica Belly

Miami, FL – Drew Estate announced today that they would be launching their new Nica Rustica “Belly” at a release event held by Cox’s Smokers Outlets at the Louisville Water Tower Park on July 30th, 2015, and that the new size would be shipping nationally by September.

The new “Belly” vitola is a 7 1⁄2” x 54 belicoso and will be available in 25-ct black craft paper bundles similar to the current Nica Rustica “El Brujito” offering. They will ship in the same fashion as the current Nica Rustica lines, in bundles as a refill to new branded display trays, which will only be available for retail use.

The blend features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper, Mexican San Andres binder and Nicaraguan fillers from the Jalapa and Estelí growing regions. The strength is medium-full and flavor notes include creamy cocoa and earth with light pepper notes on the finish. Fans of Liga Privada, Undercrown, MUWAT and, of course, the current Nica Rustica size, are sure to enjoy this blend.

Jonathan Drew, from Managua, Nicaragua stated, “Nica Rustica is a tribute to Estelí’s hard working cigar culture. Behind all the glitz and glam, there are thousands of factory Buncheros and Rolleros who keep their game strong and consistent to maintain Estelí, Nicaragua’s respected stature of ‘Mecca of Cigars’. The long awaited size, ‘Belly’, is a king of a Belicoso at an affordable price.”

The release event will be held at Louisville Water Tower Park in Louisville, KY on July 30th, 2015. Tickets are $35 and include 2 singles of the new Nica Rustica “Belly”, plus a traditional Nicaraguan Caballo Bayo style dinner and a Flor de Caña rum tasting. There will also be bundles of the Nica Rustica “Belly” available for purchase for attendees. The MSRP is $198.75 per 25-ct bundle ($7.95 per cigar). Eiroa by CLE Cigars

Eiroa by CLE Cigars

Eiroa by CLE

Wrapper: Honduran

Binder: Honduran

Filler: Honduran

Size: Robusto 5×50

Price: $9.35

Acquired: Purchased at Big Star Cigar-Mt. Juliet, TN.

The Eiroa cigar is brought to us by the man with the same name Christian Eiroa. The new Eiroa is a Honduran puro that is produced in the their new factory in Honduras.

Smoking Conditions: Evening, approximately 72 degrees.

Looks: The Eiroa features a dark brown Honduran wrapper leaf that has very minimal veining. The wrapper leaf is quite toothy and has a nice oily sheen to it. The cigar is finished off on top with a triple cap. The band is silver, red, and black and is somewhat reminiscent of what I consider traditional cigar bands.   The band reads, “EIROA” in the center surrounded by, “SALUD AMOR PESETAS.” Which I hear translates into, “Health, Love, and Money.” Around that reads, “Tradicion Tabacalera” on the top and, “Calidad Superior” below. The sides read, “Hecho 2013” and “Desde 1916.”

Pre-Light: This cigar has a pre-light aroma of earth and wood, pre-light taste is that of cocoa.

Taste: Taste wise this stick surprised me. The primary flavor notes that I got were that of cocoa and rich earth. The back end of the puff did display some pepper notes on the tongue. Overall the flavor profile of this stick was consistent and enjoyable.

Strength: Medium to light full.

Burn: After getting the cigar initially lit and correcting some uneven start burns, the remainder of the cigar burned even with a plentiful amount of white smoke.

Buy it?   I mentioned above in the taste category that I was surprised by this stick. Pleasantly surprised is the correct way to put it. I had found that my experience with the CLE sticks is that they were hit or miss for me personally. Not because of construction or quality, just on what I liked. This cigar is a definite win in the, “what I like” to smoke category. I will most likely always have a few of these on hand.

Famous Smoke Shop/Oliva Cigar Co. Collaboration: Inferno 3rd Degree

Famous Smoke Shop is a leading online distributor of discounted premium cigars. The company specializes in offering the web’s widest selection of cigars at the lowest prices. Famous has just released a new cigar line in collaboration with Oliva Cigar Co. The new release is Inferno 3rd Degree cigars, and they are exclusively available at Famous Smoke Shop. The first shipment has just arrived at the company’s warehouse and is currently available for sale on their website. The company has expressed that the new brand will be available in limited quantities, but is not a one-time release and will be a consistent offering for the foreseeable future.

inferno 3rd degree

The Inferno 3rd Degree is the third release under the Inferno umbrella. The first brand in the series, Inferno, was introduced in 2012, with the Flashpoint hitting the market a year later. The Inferno 3rd Degree is a new blend, designed to provide sophisticated and complex flavors to satisfy every cigar smoker’s taste buds. This blend will be made in small batches and production on the brand will be limited.

Inferno 3rd Degree cigars utilize a blend of all Nicaraguan tobaccos with a triple-fermented Ligero and Viso longfiller core, and a Habano-seed binder, all encased in another silky Habano seed wrapper. The result is a full strength cigar with dark, rich flavors, with a slight natural sweetness to round out a customer’s smoke. Already hailed as the best of the trio under the Inferno name, it seems as if this cigar will soon take the industry by storm.

“This is a fine cigar with incredible flavor,” said Famous Smoke Shop editor John Pullo. “Inferno 3rd Degree cigars are made by Oliva which already has a sterling reputation for their consistency and quality. This is nothing short of another outstanding cigar in their arsenal. The interesting thing about this that not many people may know, is that it maintains a low price tag for customers to take advantage of because the tobaccos are mainly all grown on Oliva’s farms. That means our customers get premium tobacco without the inflated cost of Oliva buying an outside grower’s tobacco. It’s a genius farm to table concept which resulted in this top shelf cigar.”

inferno 3rd degree box

The Inferno 3rd Degree cigars are available in four sizes – a 7 x 50 Churchill, a 6 x 60 Double Toro, a Robusto 5 x 50, and a 6 x 50 Toro. With Famous’ full box discount pricing, customers can enjoy this new offering with individual retail prices which range from $5.80 to $6.50 per cigar. Famous Smoke Shop is a leading online distributor of discounted premium cigars. The company specializes in offering the web’s widest selection of cigars at the lowest prices. Famous has just released a new cigar line in collaboration with Room 101 cigars. The new release is Room 101 El Mas Chingon cigars, and they are exclusively available at Famous Smoke Shop. The first shipment has just arrived at the company’s warehouse and is currently available for sale on their website. room 101 el mas chingon single

The Room 101 El Mas Chingon is another addition to Matt Booth’s already wildly popular cigar line, and seeks to be one of their best cigars yet as this young blender moves up the ranks in the cigar industry. This blend will be made in small batches and production on the brand will be limited, with each one measuring at a 60 ring gauge.

Room 101 El Mas Chingon cigars utilize a blend of rich tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Honduras for perfectly balanced spice, sweetness, and tobacco, with a deep earthy follow-through. The cigar wrapper is a well-fermented, naturally semi-spicy, Ecuadorian Habano leaf that complements this well-balanced cigar for a great complexity with flavors that come and go throughout the entire smoke. This is a medium-bodied cigar that will appeal to smokers who enjoy bold flavors without enduring a lot of strength. It’s great for those who enjoy mild cigars wanting to explore heavier cigars, and a comparable offering to those who enjoy stronger cigars.

“This is a cigar for the ages,” said Famous Smoke Shop Executive Editor Gary Korb. “From the moment I lit up this cigar, I knew it was going to be special. I typically enjoy everything Room 101 releases, and the El Mas Chingon has the potential to become the company’s all-star stogie. What’s even more impressive to me is the sheer variety in terms of sizes along with a low price tag. It is sure to attract cigar lovers because of the multiple sizes offered, and keep them coming back through its affordability.”
