Joya de Nicaragua to release Cuatro Cinco “Reserva Especial”

Joya de Nicaragua to release Cuatro Cinco “Reserva Especial”

JDN Cuatro Cinco Reserva

• The new super-premium cigar from Fábrica Joya de Nicaragua.
• Inspired by the overwhelming success of Cuatro Cinco Edición Limitada.
• A modified recipe using grade A filler tobaccos aged in vintage oak barrels.

Estelí, Nicaragua – In 2013, during its 45th anniversary, Joya de Nicaragua released Cuatro Cinco – Edición Limitada, a beautiful cigar containing 100% Nicaraguan fillers and five year old ligeros aged inside vintage oak barrels. This Limited Edition exhibited a unique, seductive flavor and enchanting aroma that captivated consumers worldwide and sold out in just a few short weeks. The ecstatic response from around the globe and our consumer’s desire for more, encouraged us to create a cigar as special as Cuatro Cinco Edición Limitada, only this time on an on-going basis.

Joya de Nicaragua proudly announces the release of Cuatro Cinco – Reserva Especial, a carefully modified recipe containing a unique and exceptional selection of barrel-aged Grade A fillers and a beautiful silky shade-grown habano wrapper from the legendary Jalapa valley. Distinct from the Limited Edition, it also incorporates a carefully selected volado dominican binder.

Rolled exclusively by our most experienced torcedores, this exceptional medium-to-full body cigar will continue to captivate consumers, with its rich Nicaraguan complexity, subtle woody and sweet flavors and a velvety finish. Dr. Alejandro Martínez Cuenca, Chairman of Joya de Nicaragua expresses: “This blend is a superb milestone for our factory. It’s a cigar worthy of lighting to celebrate your own extraordinary achievements and special moments.”

Unlike the Limited Edition, Cuatro Cinco Reserva Especial will be produced in small quantities on an on-going basis in four new and unique vitolas, all soft-box pressed and presented in 10 count boxes: Torpedo 6 x 52 ($12.50*), Toro 61⁄4 x 50 ($11.50*), Doble Robusto 5 x 56 ($10.50*) and a Petit Corona 41⁄2 x 46 ($8.00*). The cigar will also be distinguished by the silver details on the main band and a light silver secondary band instead of a gold one, which was unique to the Edición Limitada (*MSRP prices for USA).

The initial batch will start shipping in the last week of June 2015 to selected members of the Drew Diplomat Retailers program. It will be available to all
Drew Diplomat Retailers after this year’s IPCPR tradeshow and convention in July.

Rocky Patel American Market Selection

Rocky Patel American Market Selection

Rocky Patel American Market Selection

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan and Honduran

Size: 5 ½ x 50 Robusto

Price: $5.85

Acquired: Samples sent courtesy of Famous Smoke Shop

Over the years I have smoked a number of different Rocky Patel blends.  To be completely honestly at some point I had forgotten about Rocky Patel, I mean I always knew they were around, and I knew they were still putting out tons of products. For some reason though, I just hadn’t picked up one of their sticks in quite some time. Luckily for me our good friend Cory over at Famous Smoke Shop emailed me and said he wanted to send some over to review.

Looks: The Rocky Patel American Market Selection features a light brown Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper leaf with some light to medium veins present and a double cap. The band is black with gold trim and lettering. The band reads, “ Rocky Patel” and “American Market Selection.”

Smoking Conditions: Approximately 81 degrees and very humid, like miserably humid.

Pre-Light: The Rocky Patel American Market Selection had an aroma of hay and earth. The pre-light draw reveals flavors of hay, and somewhat reminded me of cigars my grandpa smoked when I was a kid.

Taste: Flavor wise this cigar is full of flavor. Upon first lighting, I was greeted with a deep richness and flavors of cocoa. Tons of creaminess were also noted upon my first few puffs. There was an ever so slight pleasant bitterness also present on the back end. As I started to get into the Rocky Patel American Market Selection a warm leathery note began to develop and about a quarter of the way in was joined with a very slight nuttiness. The remainder of the stick stayed fairly consistent with the cocoa, leather, and nutty flavors as well as the sweet creaminess. The bitterness that was present was a pleasant one and it remained throughout the entire smoke.  Overall, this was a great tasting cigar.

Strength: Mild

Burn: Straight and even. I would note that the smoke was noticeably abundant on this stick.

Buy it? Considering I had unintentionally drifted away from Rocky Patel, I was very pleased with this cigar and very pleased to have come back around to them. For the price, how can you not like this cigar?  Being a fan of Ecuadorian Connecticut wrappers, I think this will be one that will find a place in my humidor. Don’t take my word for it,  try it for yourself at Famous Smoke Shop

Crowned Heads-Las Calaveras 2015

Crowned Heads Las Calaveras 2015

Las Calaveras 2015 Cigar

Wrapper: Ecuadorian Habano Rosado

Binder: Nicaraguan

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: Corona Gorda LC46 6×46

Price: $9.75

Acquired: Purchased at The Smokey Cigar 2 in Brentwood, TN

Crowned Heads is a company that is near and dear to me. Partially because they are one of our local Nashville cigar companies and partially because over the years I have grown to know most everyone there and am happy to call them friends.

Las Calaveras for those of you who are not familiar with it is a limited release cigar put out by Crowned Heads every year. The name is the same, but the blend and packaging differ from year to year.  The following is a statement is from Jon Huber and was posted in our Las Calaveras review last year in regards to the meaning behind Las Calaveras; “Beginning with the Edición Limitada 2014, Las Calaveras will be an annual release that is a respectful homage to those who have passed away in the year before, and is intended to be a celebration of their lives and rememberance, rather than a mourning or a symbol of sadness and death.  Each year, we all lose a friend or loved one, or know of someone who has endured that same loss.  In today’s fast-paced world, it is all too easy to forget the fragile nature that is life.  Often, in the race to gain material success, we lose sight that our true legacy are the lives we touch and the love we leave behind once we pass on.  It is in this spirit that Las Calaveras pays tribute to those who have touched our lives and shared their love.”

The 2015 Las Calaveras release is being offered in three sizes; LC50 (5×50), LC52 (6×52), and LC46 (6×46) which I am smoking for this review.

The first release of Las Calaveras was the 2014 release last year. The 2014 Las Calaveras cigar was a stout kick you in the mouth with pepper cigar. The 2015 release is totally different. In my opinion, it’s better!

Smoking Condition: Evening, approximately 70 degrees.

Looks: This cigars wrapper leaf is a nice Ecuadorian Habano Rosado, it is medium brown in color and has a nice light oily sheen to it. The wrapper leaf has some small to medium veins running through it and is finished off on top with a triple cap. The finish of the cigar has almost a suede like appearance. The band of the 2015 Las Calaveras release is white with gold trim. The band reads, “Las Calaveras” in black with, “EL2015” in gold on top and “Esteli Nicaragua” in gold below. Box packaging is cream white with gold writing. The label is black with a day of the dead type skull.

Las Calaveras 2015

Taste: I am immediately hit with notes of cocoa, cream, and nuts upon firing up this cigar. As the cigar opens and grows, a very pleasant but mild wood note develops. The flavor profile of this cigar is unique and frankly, delicious. Each puff of the 2015 Las Calaveras is full of cocoa notes with a nice strong nuttiness present on the back of the tongue and the roof of your mouth. As with all the Crowned Heads sticks available, that creaminess is definitely present making each puff more and more enjoyable. The flavors overall were consistent and amazing good.

Strength: Medium

Burn: Spot on the money! Even though I got up and walked away a number of times during this smoke, it stayed lit and burned evenly throughout requiring no touch ups. Of the five that I have smoked so far, all have been consistent with no burn issues whatsoever.

Buy it? These guys have yet to put out a stick that I have not liked. This one, I absolutely love. Ask Patrick the GM of The Smokey Cigar 2 about my trip there the day they came in. I walked in and grabbed a box, he looked at me and said you don’t even have to smoke it beforehand, it’s that good.

Epicurean Carnavale

Epicurean Carnavale

Epicurean Carnavale

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro

Binder: American Broadleaf and Honduran

Filler: Nicaraguan

Size: 5.5 x 48

Price: $9

Acquired: Sample courtesy of Emilio Cigar and Epicurean Cigar.

I’m quite the fan when it comes to Epicurean Cigars, and I have found that I always keep quite a few of them handy in my humidors. For those of you not familiar with Epicurean, the brand owner is Steven Ysidron. I have had the opportunity to hang out with Steven and his lovely wife Renee on a number of occasions, around the country at cigar events. Steven has been in the cigar business since the late 1980’s, and is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to cigars and tobacco. Needless to say when I heard about his newest cigar, the Epicurean Carnavale, I was excited.

Smoking Conditions: About 70 degrees with a light breeze.

Looks: The Epicurean Carnavale has a medium colored Nicaraguan Habano Oscuro wrapper that has minimal to light veining and has an almost a spotty appearance. The wrapper leaf of this cigar has a nice oily sheen to it and just a bit of toothiness. The cigar is box pressed and is finished off on top with a double cap. The band of this cigar is very Carnavale. The band features a Carnavale styled mask with the words, “Carnavale” underneath. Below the name are the words, “Celebracion de mundo.”

Epicurean Carnavale Band

Pre-Light: One the pre-light draw, I detected notes of earth and pepper. The cigar had a very rich scent as well.

Taste: The important part! The Epicurean Carnivale opens with a very smooth earthy flavor as well as a deep smokiness. I am detecting the ever slightest bit of pepper on my lips and a somewhat creaminess that further develops the more I smoke. There is a bit of a cocoa note that has developed before the first quarter as well as some black pepper notes on the tip of the tongue. Overall, this was a fairly consistent and tasty stick flavor wise throughout the entire smoke. I will note that the creaminess did increase quite a bit whilst smoking.

Burn: Spot on and even.

Buy it? Definitely. I smoked through the two samples that were sent to me from Epicureans distributor, Emilio Cigar. Since then, I am on the hunt for some more because they are definitely worth having a on hand.
